Photo of the day: Into the deep waters of history: The chronicle of creating the port in Kythira.
Where the crystal blue of Kapsali embraces the rugged rocks of Kythira, one of the proudest and most moving chapters of our island’s modern history was written. In an era when everything required superhuman effort, the sea ceased to be an obstacle and became the arena where human will conquered the elements of nature.
In this unique photograph from the past, the dawn of a new era comes to life. With Manolis Daponte as the pioneer and very soul of the endeavor—as we have mentioned in previous posts—the first major port works began in Kapsali. He was a man of profound vision, courage, and boundless passion for his homeland, who stood on the front lines to guide a monumental struggle.
The heavy crane on the floating platform, the small boats sailing around it, the calloused hands and salt-stained brows of the men wrestling with iron and stone—they were not merely erecting a structure in the water. They were building the hope of the Tsirigotes. They were creating a safe embrace for the ships, a haven for seafarers, and a vital lifeline of communication for the entire island.
Every concrete block they sank into the deep waters was a seed of rebirth. It was a promise that Kythira would no longer remain isolated, that those who had emigrated would find a safer journey home, and that the locals would see a brighter tomorrow.
Today, gazing upon these images, the heart overflows with enduring respect and deep emotion. Because behind every port we now enjoy lies the spirit, dedication, and bravery of men like Manolis Daponte, who never yielded to hardship but instead tamed the sea for the benefit of generations to come.
An everlasting legacy of honor and gratitude to the pioneers who laid the foundations for the future of our Kythira.
