Photo of the Day: At Yesterday’s Desks: The School of Frilingianika Shortly After the War
Kythera, shortly after the war. Through the wear, the fading, and the deep tear across the old photograph, time seems to have frozen at the Frilingianika Primary School. It is a difficult and impoverished era, yet filled with anticipation and the hope of rebuilding, where life attempts to find its footing once again through the eyes of children.
At the center of this historic image stands out the teacher, Mrs. Fofi, seated in her dark blue, austere yet elegant dress. She appears to be a beacon of safety, with a younger girl resting tenderly against her. Around her, the village girls stand with a touching, deep seriousness on their faces—a trait of that generation's children, who grew up all too soon. They are wearing their finest dresses, hand-colored in soft tones of green, blue, and red, adorned with those characteristic, immaculate white cloth collars. Every glance hides a story, and every child’s face looking into the lens carries a silent promise for a better tomorrow on the island of Kythera.
The worn vertical line tearing through the middle of the photo feels like time itself, separating us from that yesterday. Unfortunately, beyond the teacher’s name, the era, and the location, we know nothing else about the faces looking back at us from the past. Who were these young schoolgirls? What lives did they lead, and what families did they create in Tsirigo or perhaps across the world as emigrants?
This photograph is an open window into the island’s memory and calls for your help. Perhaps someone will recognize their grandmother, mother, aunt, or an old neighbor from Frilingianika in those serious, young eyes. Any piece of information, any memory, could give a voice and a name back to these girls, preserving and bringing to life a precious, nostalgic fragment of Kythera's history. If you recognize any of these faces, sharing their story would be invaluable.
Special thanks to Mrs. Mary Kalokerinou for the photograph.
