When the Sea Embraced Hope: The First Port Works in Agia Pelagia
At the edge of the old harbor of Agia Pelagia, where the waves meet the silence of the rocks, stands a marble inscription. It is a simple piece of marble, yet it carries the soul and devotion of an entire era, dedicated to the memory of the volunteer and benefactor Panagiotis Koronaios (Poulakis).
It was the year 1933. In a Greece struggling through hardship, on an island where the sea was simultaneously a blessing and isolation, one man refused to remain a passive bystander. Through tireless personal effort, out of his own modest means, but above all by uniting the people of Kythira through community fundraisers, Panagiotis Koronaios laid the first cornerstone for the breakwater—a structure just 70 meters long at the time, yet one that measured miles in the hearts of the islanders.
Until then, every arrival ashore was a struggle against the elements of nature. With the construction of the breakwater, the northern part of Kythira finally gained a sheltered haven. Boarding and disembarking became safe for the inhabitants, goods arrived dependably, and hope for a better tomorrow took root in the land.
The commemorative plaque continues to whisper the story of a man who believed in the power of giving and unity. A lasting reminder that the most meaningful works are built not only with stone and cement, but with love for humanity and country.
