Photo of the Day: The Agia Pelagia Group: A Sunday that never ended
The colors of the photograph may have faded, taking on that warm, nostalgic hue of time, but the memory remains crystal clear. It is an autumn Sunday afternoon in 1980, on the concrete harbor of Agia Pelagia in Kythira. The sea stands vast and serene in the background, a silent witness to the youth brimming with life and optimism before it.
The group of six friends had gone down to the pier, leaving behind the worries of the week. Takis, Yiannis, Giorgos, Michalis, and the two Vangelises stand closely knit as one; the characteristic fashion of the era—fitted t-shirts and jeans—testifying to a time of carefreeness and innocence. They pose spontaneously, with the photographer's shadow falling heavily on the rough concrete in front of them, as if trying to hold onto this moment forever. In that moment, the world belongs to them, and the time ahead of them seems infinite.
However, the gaze is inevitably drawn downward, to Vangelis, who sits relaxed on the pier, leaning casually to the side. It is his presence that gives the photograph its true, poignant weight. That boy, who passed away so unjustly and so early, leaving an unhealable void at the gatherings and celebrations that followed, remains there forever. The lens kept him untouched by the ravages of time. To his friends, he will forever be young, forever smiling, forever an integral part of that sweet autumn afternoon.
