Υπό τη σκέπη της Μυρτιδιώτισσας
Βρισκόμαστε στο Ιερό Προσκύνημα των Μυρτιδίων, στα ευλογημένα σκαλιά της Παναγίας της Μυρτιδιώτισσας. Μια φωτογραφία αναδυόμενη μέσα από το φως, ίσως από τη δεκαετία του 1960.
Στο κέντρο, λουσμένη στον λαμπερό ήλιο του νησιού, μια νέα ζωή μόλις έχει λάβει την ευλογία. Το μυστήριο της βάπτισης έχει ολοκληρωθεί και ολόκληρη η οικογένεια –συγγενείς και αγαπημένοι φίλοι– στέκει περήφανη στα σκαλιά. Ο σεβάσμιος ιερέας, με τη λευκή του γενειάδα, βρίσκεται ανάμεσά τους, σαν ένα ζωντανό σύμβολο πίστης και παράδοσης. Πλάι του, ο παππούς με το χαρακτηριστικό ψάθινο καπέλο, ενώ στα πόδια του βρίσκεται ακουμπισμένο το καλάθι που χρησιμεύει ως κούνια για το μωρό. Γύρω τους, γυναίκες με τα κομψά, λιτά φορέματα της εποχής και άντρες με τα καλά τους κοστούμια, χαμογελούν αυθόρμητα στον φακό. Και ανάμεσά τους τα μικρά παιδιά, με εκείνα τα αθώα, γεμάτα περιέργεια βλέμματα, να στέκονται ήσυχα δίπλα στους μεγάλους.
Αν κλείσεις τα μάτια, σχεδόν μπορείς να ακούσεις το χαρμόσυνο χτύπημα της καμπάνας να αντηχεί στα πεύκα. Μπορείς να νιώσεις τη δροσιά της πέτρας και να μυρίσεις το λιβάνι, που σμίγει αρμονικά με την αρμύρα του κυθηραϊκού αέρα.
Είναι βαθιά συγκινητικό να αντικρίζεις αυτά τα βλέμματα. Ο χρόνος κύλησε σαν νερό, οι δεκαετίες πέρασαν και πολλά από αυτά τα πρόσωπα ίσως να έχουν πια φύγει. Όμως, σε αυτό το μικρό κομμάτι χαρτί, ζουν για πάντα. Είναι οι ρίζες, είναι η ιστορία, είναι η αλυσίδα της ζωής που συνεχίζεται αδιάκοπα. Μια στιγμή απόλυτης χαράς και ενότητας, προστατευμένη για πάντα κάτω από τη σκέπη της Μυρτιδιώτισσας.

Photo of the Day: Under the shelter of Myrtidiotissa
We are at the Holy Shrine of Myrtidia, on the blessed steps of Panagia Myrtidiotissa. A photograph emerging through the light, perhaps from the 1960s.
In the center, bathed in the bright island sun, a new life has just received its blessing. The sacrament of baptism is complete, and the entire family—relatives and beloved friends—stands proudly on the steps. The venerable priest, with his white beard, stands among them like a living symbol of faith and tradition. Beside him is the grandfather in his characteristic straw hat, while resting at his feet is the basket serving as the baby's cradle. Around them, women in the elegant, simple dresses of the era and men in their best suits smile spontaneously at the camera. And among them are the small children, with their innocent, curious gazes, standing quietly next to the adults.
If you close your eyes, you can almost hear the joyous ringing of the bell echoing through the pine trees. You can feel the coolness of the stone and smell the incense, blending harmoniously with the sea salt of the Kytherian breeze.
It is deeply moving to look into these eyes. Time has flowed like water, decades have passed, and many of these faces may now be gone. But on this small piece of paper, they live forever. They are the roots, they are the history, they are the chain of life that continues unbroken. A moment of absolute joy and unity, forever protected under the shelter of Myrtidiotissa.
